It was hard to find a definitive answer about what Pink Hat SEO is, all I could find were vague references to Pink Hat SEO but with no explanation (likely because this is a fairly new term I believe).

So here is what I think comprises Pink Hat SEO, and I agree with Riz on many points:

First of all, every Pink Hat SEO must realize that behind every web there is a webmaster, and at the end of the day, you don't get your link from a website or directory or blog, you get your link from a real person. This is key. When you can achieve this mindset, it becomes possible for you to do Pink Hat SEO.

So now you can think like a Pink Hat but what to do next?

Well, start the social networking game. Do some PR. Don't send dry requests for links, offer them something in return.

Like Riz, I agree that personal favours can help get links, and I have used this in many forms on my shopautodotca seocontest site. Okay and I am not talking about "personal favours" here, I just mean personal favours. Like what? Here are some things I have done to get links to my shopautodotca seocontest entry:

1. Helped people rewrite the html on their pages to reflect current standards.
2. Reviewed blogs, sites, services.

If you do decide to send link requests by email, make sure you don't send the same email to everyone, and make sure you don't just say: Hey want to give me a link? Tell a story in the email, make it interesting enough for them to want to visit your site. Getting them to just look at your site is half the battle. I have done a few of these types of email requests for my shopautodotca seocontest blog, I got a few good ones today in fact.

There are so many social networking services on the www today, it would be impossible not to make a few friends/contacts online. Avail of those, and don't just do it for gain, have fun with people, be a human being.

Lastly, Pink Hat SEO is about being ethical, and about having a heart. I have linked to the sites of my competitors in the shopautodotca seocontest just because I figured they needed it or deserved it on several occasions during the shopautodotca seocontest. I have promoted sites on this blog, not for my own gain, and in several occasions they did not link back to me. I just do it because I wear a Pink Hat. Pink Hat SEO is about getting your site to #1 because that is where you should be according to everybody else, not just based on your ability to fool the search engines.

N.B. Pink Hat SEO has nothing to do with being a girl, it's just that girls are more likely to use these approaches to SEO as they are more "our style".

I have worn many hats since the beginning of the shopautodotca seocontest, and though I can see the value of all the approaches, I like wearing my Pink Hat the most because at least this way I can have some fun. And if I have said it once, I could say it a million times, girls just wanna have fun. ;-) And we also like purses.
